PASTURE-RAISED HERITAGE LIVESTOCK

Horton Bay Heritage Farm raises heritage livestock in Northern Michigan, including Dexter cattle, Katahdin sheep, and Silver Fox rabbits. Availability changes seasonally, and some breeds may be offered in limited numbers.

Heritage Breed Katahdin Sheep

We raise grass-based Dexter cattle selected for hardiness, calm temperaments, efficient grazing, and practical small-farm performance in Northern Michigan.

Dexters are a smaller heritage dual-purpose breed valued for both quality beef and family milk production. Their efficient size, gentle nature, and ability to thrive on pasture make them well suited for regenerative grazing systems and homestead farms. Some animals in our herd carry the A2/A2 milk protein trait.

We are growing our herd. We will add an availability list when we welcome some new babies!

Heritage Breed Katahdin Sheep

We raise pasture-based Katahdin sheep selected for hardiness, parasite resistance, calm temperaments, and practical performance in Northern Michigan farm conditions.

Katahdins are a hair sheep breed, meaning they naturally shed without shearing. Their low-input management and grazing ability make them well suited for regenerative farms and homesteads.

Heritage Breed Silver Fox Rabbits

Silver Fox rabbits are a rare American heritage breed with a quiet temperament, good mothering instincts, and a practical size for small farms and homesteads.

Although the breed was once valued for its unique silvered coat, today it is mostly raised as an excellent meat rabbit. Small farms and homesteaders have helped bring the breed back by recognizing its hardiness, efficient growth, gentle personalities, and usefulness in a sustainable farmstead setting. They also make wonderful pets, and gardeners value rabbit manure as one of the best natural soil amendments and garden fertilizers.
